MxGuard Help — Quick start

Quick start

Five steps to get your domain protected by MxGuard. Total time: about 10 minutes plus DNS propagation.

1. Sign in

Use the credentials your administrator gave you, or follow the password reset link if you've forgotten them. You'll land on your dashboard, which shows your protected domains and today's mail traffic.

2. Add your domain

On the dashboard, click + add domain. Enter:

  • Domain — the bare name (e.g. example.com, not www.example.com)
  • Real mail server — the hostname or IP of your existing mail server. This is where MxGuard forwards clean mail.
  • Port — typically 25 (default SMTP), 2525 (alternative), or 587 (submission)
  • Accept all recipients — leave checked unless you want MxGuard to verify each recipient with your server before accepting

3. Verify ownership

After submitting, you'll see a TXT record to add to your DNS. It looks like:

Type: TXT
Name: _mxguard-verify.example.com
Value: mxg-XzimddVPfUBt0c1RF3vVzJPhaIHP28y8

Add this to your DNS provider's control panel. Wait 1–2 minutes for propagation, then click Verify now. Once verified, the domain status changes from pending_verification to active.

4. Point your MX records at MxGuard

Update your domain's MX records at your DNS provider:

Type: MX
Name: @
Priority: 10
Value: mx1.mxguard.uk

Remove any other MX records. DNS propagation can take anywhere from a minute to a few hours depending on your old TTL.

5. Watch the feed

Open Feed in a tab and leave it open. Within an hour of the MX change you'll see mail flowing. Every message shows its score and why it scored that way.

That's it. Mail is now being filtered. Read Dashboard and Live feed next to learn what the numbers mean.
